Showtime: Lack of headliner led to Strikeforce broadcast scratch

Less than a month after the historic cancellation of UFC 151,
Strikeforce has now followed suit.
The decision to scratch "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy" was prompted by Showtime's decision to cancel its plans to
broadcast the card following the withdrawal of Strikeforce lightweight
champion Gilbert Melendez from the evening's main event opposite Pat
Strikeforce officials have thus far remained silent on the issue
following Sunday night's official announcement. On Monday evening,
Showtime executives offered a simple explanation for their decision:
there simply wasn't a suitable headliner available.

Several managers and fighters contacted by MMAjunkie.com say they
received word on Sunday night that "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy"
had been canceled.
They have yet to be informed of the next step.
"I just want to get on a show as soon as possible," said Josh Thomson,
who was scheduled to fight Caros Fodor on the Showtime-televised main
card. Strikeforce and Showtime officials were unreachable for comment.

It's getting to the point where you don't so much plan on an MMA event as you pencil it in.
First it was UFC 151. Not to be outdone by its big brother organization, now Strikeforce has canceled this weekend's event. One more and we'll have ourselves a trend.
According to an email sent out by Strikeforce late Sunday night, it was Showtime that mucked things up. If there's a better sign that both Showtime and Zuffa would be better off letting the Strikeforce brand die a merciful death, I can't imagine what it would look like.

The circumstances are slightly different, but fans no doubt will be wondering if this really can be happening again.
Just a month after the UFC was forced to cancel a card for the first time in the Zuffa era, now the cancellation bug has bitten Strikeforce. The promotion's Saturday show in Sacramento, Calif., "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy," has been scrapped following an injury to lightweight champion and headliner Gilbert Melendez.
Promotion officials late Sunday night announced the event's cancellation.
Tim Kennedy meets Trevor Smith at Strikeforce's November show in Oklahoma City

After his July middleweight title fight setback, Tim Kennedy will return to work in November.
Kennedy is set to meet Trevor Smith when Strikeforce heads to Oklahoma City on Nov. 3. Company officials on Thursday announced the new fight booking.
The show takes place at Chesapeake Energy Center in Oklahoma City with a main card on Showtime and prelims on Showtime Extreme.
Sara McMann vs. Liz Carmouche official for Nov. 3 Strikeforce event

A bout between promotional newcomerSara McMann andLiz Carmouche is now set for Strikeforce.
MMAjunkie.com recently passed along news of the bout, which the organization recently made official.
The bout is part of a Nov. 3 event at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Main-card fights, including one with headliner Daniel Cormier, air on Showtime following prelims on Showtime Extreme.
On 4-0 run, Strikeforce vet Lyle Beerbohm signs with World Series of Fighting

After a two-fight skid in Strikeforce, Lyle Beerbohm has gone on a 4-0 run in 2012 that now has him a deal with the World Series of Fighting.
Beerbohm has signed a multi-fight deal with the new promotion and is expected to have his first bout announced soon. Beerbohm's management team recently announced the signing.
The WSOF is scheduled to make its debut on Nov. 3 at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The event's main card airs live on NBC Sports Network.
Officials confirm Frank Mir out, Daniel Cormier remains on Nov. 3 Strikeforce card

Officials have confirmed the UFC's Frank Mir is out of a cross-promotion fight with Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier.
MMAjunkie.com initially passed along news of the change late Tuesday. As we reported, Mir suffered a knee injury, according to officials.
A replacement search is underway and Cormier will remain on the Nov. 3 Strikeforce card.
