There's perhaps no place that could better illustrate how far the sport
of mixed martial arts has come since its dark days than Brazil,
otherwise known as the cradle of MMA.
Thirteen years after the UFC touched down without much fanfare in
mega-city Sao Paulo, the promotion has returned to a country where
fighting stops daily life.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's best days clearly are behind him.
Since joining the UFC, the former PRIDE champion has won an interim belt (way back in 2008 when he beat Tim Sylvia) and topped Randy Couture in a UFC 102 thriller a year later.
But the often-injured Nogueira has fought just once in the past two years, and the 35-year-old Brazilian admits ring rust may be a factor at Saturday's UFC 134 event.

RIO DE JANEIRO - As part of this week's UFC 134 event, officials hosted a unique open-workout session on Wednesday.
On the sands of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, fighters and fans braved intermittent rain showers for the customary pre-event sparring and workouts.
MMAjunkie.com's Christian Stein was on scene and captured images of the festivities.

RIO DE JANEIRO - UFC notables Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Antonio Rogerio
Nogueira, Junior Dos Santos and Vitor Belfort returned to their roots
Tuesday to inspire the next generation of Brazilian athletes.
Boxing coach Claudio Coelho, a lifelong resident of the Cantagalo favela
(shanty town), hosted an event at his Academia Nobre Arte ("Academy of
the Noble Art") in Rio de Janeiro to raise awareness of ongoing efforts
to divert slum youths from a life of crime.
The community gathering was part of a week of events leading up to UFC 134.

It looks like the UFC finally ran out of options.
After a hectic pace of shuffling in light heavyweights to key UFC 133 matchups, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva was finally forced to admit defeat.
UFC officials today announced that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira's withdrawal from the Aug. 6 event has forced the cancellation of a planned co-feature contest with Rich Franklin.

Bellator Fighting Championships' season-five bantamweight tournament kicks off Sept. 24 at Bellator 51, officials recently announced.
The eight-man tournament determines a No. 1 contender for current 135-pound champ Zack Makovsky.
