T.J. Dillashaw Hopes Urijah Faber Isn't Returning Because He's 'Hurting For Money'

Urijah Faber will come out of retirement to face off against Ricky Simon at UFC Sacramento next month, a move which has former teammate T.J. Dillashaw questioning the motivation behind it.

Faber mentored Dillashaw as a young fighter, taking him under his wing at his Team Alpha Male gym in Sacramento. However, when coach Duane Ludwig split from Team Alpha Male in 2014, Dillashaw was one of several fighters who left with him, and went on to win the UFC bantamweight title under Ludwig’s continued tutelage.

Dillashaw and Faber haven’t seen eye-to-eye since the split and Dillashaw talked about his former mentor’s return to the sport on a recent episode of Chael Sonnen’s “You’re Welcome” podcast (via MMA Mania) claiming he could tell Faber wasn’t done when he hung up his gloves before stating that he hoped ‘The California Kid’ wasn’t doing it because he ran out of money:

“I could always tell when he retired that it wasn’t going to be the last fight. On a technical level, (he) probably maybe should have stayed retired, especially with the young and hungry guys coming up.

“I’m hoping he’s not hurting for money, even though we’ve had our beefs and whatever — you never want to wish that bad on someone. Personally, I think he probably should have stayed retired, but we’ll see. We’ll see how he comes out.”

Faber will have the home crowd support behind his when he makes his return against Simon next month and could even fight the current dual-division champion Henry Cejudo in the future after “The Messenger” called out Faber after his recent win over Marlon Moraes.

Dillashaw is currently serving a two-year suspension handed down to him from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for performance-enhancing drugs and is ineligible to fight until Jan. 19, 2020.
