Bellator MMA middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi has a reputation of being outspoken about use of performance-enhancing drugs and isn’t shying away from the subject of disgraced former UFC bantamweight champ T.J. Dillashaw.

Dillashaw tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), recently claiming he took it to help him cut weight for his much anticipated super-fight against Henry Cejudo for the flyweight title. Dillashaw successfully made weight for the fight but was finished by Cejudo in just 32 seconds.

In March, Dillashaw announced he was relinquishing his bantamweight belt, shortly before the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) released a statement that they had handed Dillashaw a two-year suspension for taking EPO.

In a recent interview with The Score, Mousasi didn’t hold back when it came to fighters taking performance enhancing drugs and questioned why Dillashaw thought he’d get away with it.

“The stupidity of fighters, knowing that they’re going to get tested, and they still do it,” Mousasi said. “It shows how desperate they are, so it’s usually a sign that people have been abusing it before, that they don’t feel they can do it without it.”

Mousasi claimed he was not surprised when he heard Dillashaw failed the drug test, as he had long suspected the former champion was taking some form of banned substance.

“And T.J. Dillashaw, for a long time [I] was suspicious that he did steroids,” Mousasi said. “And after USADA came, he still did it. They didn’t catch him the first two times, but eventually they caught him.”

The 33-year-old Mousasi said he believes that fighters who are caught using performance-enhancing drugs should be punished more severely, as it’s essentially stealing something from one’s opponent.

“There’s nothing to say about those guys,” Mousasi said. “If you win a fight, you deserve it. It’s yours. But let’s say if you do steroids or you do some different things and you win it, then you steal something from the other guy. That’s the way I see it. It’s in the rules: no steroids. It’s the same as don’t go through a red light, don’t kill anybody, it’s a rule. And if they don’t follow it, they should be punished and not very lightly, I feel, [but] a lot heavier.”
