Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin Scores Sensational KO of Steve Rolls, Calls Out ‘Canelo’

In his first fight since losing his WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight world titles to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September, it took Gennady Golovkin a few rounds to get going in the first of his new six-fight deal with Dazn.

However, when “GGG” finally got things going against Steve Rolls in the main event of a boxing card at legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City, he did what he typically always does. Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KOs) unfurled a wicked left hook at the end of a flurry to flatten Rolls, ending their 160-pound showdown in the fourth.

Rolls (19-1, 10 KOs) was very tentative in the opening round and seemed to be dwarfed by the enormity of the stage he was on. Unbeaten coming in, the Toronto fighter had never faced anybody with the skillset of his Kazakhstani counterpart, but Rolls eventually started getting into a rhythm. Rolls began landing several hooks to the body behind a pesky jab and he also cracked “GGG” with multiple power shots to the head.

But just as the relative unknown fighter from Canada was possibly on his way to building momentum, Golovkin ended his night with a precision. Golovkin clipped his foe with a loopy overhand left to the top of the head and then rocked him with a right cross. Golovkin, sensing a knockout, swarmed Rolls, who backed into the ropes. From there, “GGG” unloaded a ferocious volley of punches and eventually blasted Rolls with a crushing left hook.

Rolls fell face first, somehow climbed to his feet at referee Steve Willis’ count of eight, but then fell back into the ropes. The end came officially at 2:09 of the fourth and after the fight, Golovkin, as expected, called out “Canelo” for a third match between the two rivals.
