Tyron Woodley Ready to Fight in August Provided State Permits Cortisone Shot for Injured Hand

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion Tyron Woodley recently pulled out of a scheduled rematch against Robbie Lawler due to a hand injury. Citing the specific nature of his impairment with TMZ Sports today, "The Chosen One" announced that he is ready to return in August, provided he is allowed to receive a cortisone shot for his right hand 10 days prior to his next fight.

Woodley explains that the thumb on his right hand is afflicted with two levels of arthritis. Chronic arthritis on one of three joints, and severe arthritis on another. As Woodley is an active fighter, his only option for remediation is a temporary one. He can rehab the thumb to build up strength and flexibility, and then receive a cortisone shot 10 days prior to his proximate fight, whenever that may be.

Because of the medication requirement, Woodley is seeking to fight in a state whose commission approves such a treatment. "So, I have the UFC checking on dates and cities in states that actually accept, that allow you to have a cortisone shot," Woodley explained.

Woodley laments having to pull out of his rematch with Lawler, an opponent he knows would come after him with everything he has. "This is the first time in 14 years of fighting that I've ever committed to a fight and not followed through, and I've fought with a lot of injuries."

The 37-year-old is targeting an August returns and holds firm that his path back to a title shot should not take more than two fights. "I'm just looking for the right fight. I'm not gonna take no two, three fights in between. No, I shouldn't have to do that. I'm one of the greatest, if not the greatest welterweights of all time, and you know, I don't have to go back and prove myself once again."
