While Usman has done his part, the matchup is far from a done deal. According to ESPN's Ariel Helwani, Woodley hasn’t signed the contract yet. The welterweight king recently revealed he was awaiting clearance from his doctor but that he hoped to fight in the first quarter of 2019.
The date of the targeted bout is unclear, but it won’t be UFC 233, which the promotion announced was canceled on Wednesday. The UFC reportedly wanted Woodley to make a title defense at that Jan. 26 event.
While it initially seemed as though Woodley would face former interim 170-pound champ Colby Covington next, Usman’s impressive victory over Rafael dos Anjos at “The Ultimate Fighter 28” finale has given him some momentum.
“He [Usman] actually got stronger as the fight went on, throwing tons of punches, kicks, wrestling. Stood up and went toe-to-toe with him [dos Anjos] a few times. I was impressed,” UFC President White said following the event. “I’m telling you, I want to see him fight [Tyron] Woodley now. I want to see the Woodley fight. That’s what I want, but we’ll see.”
