Frank Edgar Confident He Will Be Max Holloway's Next Title Challenger

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is confident he’ll be next in line to challenge Max Holloway for the featherweight belt after the Hawaiian’s impressive demolition of Brian Ortega last weekend at UFC 231.

Edgar was previously scheduled to face “Blessed” in March at UFC 222 but the Hawaiian was forced off the card due to injury and replaced by Brian Ortega. Ortega produced the best performance of his career, knocking Edgar out with a sensational uppercut to become the first man to stop “The Answer” and earn his own shot at Holloway’s title.

“The Answer” fought Cub Swanson back in April, winning via unanimous decision. and told host Ariel Helwani on his MMA Show that he should be next in line to fight Holloway in the next title fight (transcribed by Low Kick MMA):

“I think I’m next in line, I think we should go back to that fight (Holloway). I feel like Holloway, he doesn’t owe me anything, but I think we wanna get that one done.”

Edgar said he’s spoken to UFC President Dana White about his next fight with White agreeing to talk next week about future plans.

“I said, ‘I gave my shot up, maybe it wasn’t the best idea, but I thought I was gonna win that fight, it didn’t go my way.’ And he said we’ll see. He said we’ll talk next week, we’ll see what happens, and we’ll see how it plays out.”

Edgar is currently recovering from a torn bicep, though he may be waiting a while to fight Holloway anyway, as the Hawaiian has expressed an interest in moving up a division to challenge for the lightweight title.
