Damir Ismagulov vs. Alex Gorgees

Round 1

The lightweights touch gloves and we’re underway in Adelaide. Ismagulov measures the range and smacks a kick onto his foe’s lead leg. Ismagulov lands another inside leg kick following a brief exchange. A straight right hand lands clean from the Russian, who enters into the clinch moments later. He forces Gorgees into the fence and tosses him to the mat from there. Ismagulov sets up in half guard near the fence. Gorgees looks to control Ismagulov, and he eventually hustles his way back up. Ismagulov quickly gets a single leg and gets Gorgees down. The Russian allows his foe to stand and then shoots immediately against the fence. Gorgees defends and lands a couple elbows to the side of the head. The lightweights finally separate with a little under a minute to go. Gorgees shucks off a takedown try, and they remain in the center of the cage, trading occasional kicks. Ismagulov lands another straight right before the horn. 10-9 Ismagulov.

Round 2

Gorgees turns and urges the crowd to make some noise prior to the start of the round. Ismagulov is unfazed and lands a straight right followed by a hook to the body. Gorgees defends a takedown attempt. Ismagulov steps in with a kick to the body, which seems to freeze Gorgees. The Russian takes advantage and gets his man down to the mat. Ismagulov is in half guard, maintaining heavy pressure from top position. Gorgees seems content to try and control his opponent by grapevining his leg and denying space. Ismagulov continues to work to advance, and he’s able to posture up and drop a couple decent punches to the face. Ismagulov’s output from above is getting better as we hit the 1:00 mark. The Russian stands for a moment, then dives back into his foe’s guard with a right over the top. Ismagulov ends the round grinding away from top position. 10-9 Ismagulov.

Round 3

Ismagulov gets flashy to open the final frame, landing a spinning back kick to the midsection before teasing a “Showtime” kick off the cage. The fighters taunt and preen for a moment before Ismagulov shoots and takes Gorgees down near the fence. The Russian lets Gorgees back up and shoots again. Gorgees defends and lands elbows to the side of the head, only to be met by a spinning upward elbow from Ismagulov. Ismagulov lets go of a single leg, but then times a Gorgees’ punch and changes levels for yet another takedown. Ismagulov is back on top in half guard, a familiar position for this fight. As he has throughout, Gorgees struggles to generate anything from his back, while the M-1 Challenge veteran finds the space to drop an elbow with a little more than a minute to go. Ismagulov briefly pins Gorgees left arm and lands a few punches before the Aussie frees himself. Ismagulov drops another elbow. They trade in the waning seconds of the round, but this fight belongs to Ismagulov. 10-9 Ismagulov (30-27 Ismagulov).

Mizuto Hirota vs. Christos Giagos

Round 1

Both fighters come out orthodox, and Giagos appears to have a clear size advantage. A brief exchange ends with a knee in close quarters from Giagos. A right hand over the top connects for Giagos, and moments later he buckles Hirota with another right. The American rushes in and tees off on Hirota, who does a good job absorbing the damage against the cage. Giagos shifts gears and secures a takedown near the fence. Giagos creates space and drops ground-and-pound from above before Hirota is able to scramble back to his feet at the 2:00 mark. Hirota moves forward, and Giagos responds with a takedown. Hirota has his opponent ensnared in a guillotine choke, but Giagos is able to pop his head free. Hirota maintains a closed guard as Giagos walks him toward the cage. Giagos looks to pass and eats an upkick. Hirota uses a leg lock to return to his feet and lands a punch before the horn. 10-9 Giagos.

Round 2

Hirota is attempting to pressure Giagos early, but the American counters by landing a takedown. Giagos lands punches to the head and body from inside Hirota’s closed guard. Hirota is more interested in wrapping his foe up than escaping from the bottom. Giagos passes to half guard as Hirota tries to use the fence to walk his way up. The Japanese fighter stands for a moment but is summarily slammed to his back. Giagos continues his methodical work from above as we near the 1:00 mark. Hirota attempts to scramble to his feet with 30 seconds to go, and Giagos lands a knee to the head as he stands. Hirota is able to connect with a couple knees before the horn sounds. 10-9 Giagos.

Round 3

Hirota pressures forward with combinations, but doesn’t land anything significant before Giagos changes levels and drives him into the fence. This time, Hirota reverses the takedown and winds up in top position. Giagos uses his feet to push off the fence and land in Hirota’s guard. The lightweights scramble up, but Giagos explodes for a takedown almost instantly. Hirota is back on the defensive, working to a knee against the fence. Giagos drags Hirota’s legs back out from under him as the grueling battle against the cage continues. Hirota is up, but Giagos continues to mash him against the cage. Hirota does well to sprawl on a takedown and secures a front headlock. He releases his grip and swings away in close quarters, again missing the mark. Giagos shoves his foe back into the cage, but Hirota sprawls on another takedown. Giagos appears to be fading a little, but he remains relentless in his pursuit of the takedown. Hirota is able to transition to his foe’s back with 25 seconds to go before moving to full mount. The Japanese veteran has only a few seconds to work, but Giagos prevents him from landing anything significant before the final horn. 10-9 Giagos (30-27 Giagos).

Elias Garcia vs. Kai Kara-France

Round 1

Garcia shoots for a single leg immediately and rolls for a heel hook. Kara-France defends well and scrambles into top position. Garcia is neutralizing Kara-France so far, and the New Zealand native stands to free himself from an armbar. They’re back in the center of the cage now, and Kara-France connects with a right hand, and then a left jab. Garcia drops Kara-France with a left hand, but the Kiwi pops right back up. Garcia drops low for a single leg, allowing Kara-France to take top position. Kara-France is bleeding onto Garcia’s chest. Garcia attempts to frame an armbar, but Kara-France escapes and drops some ground-and-pound. Kara-France scrambles to his foe’s back with just under a minute to go. Kara France has both hooks in, and Garcia looks to control the wrists of his opponent. Another scramble ensues and Kara-France stands, ending the round with some furious standing-to-ground punches. 10-9 Kara-France.

Round 2

Garcia lands a solid one-two combination. Kara France answers with a right hand and then wobbles Garcia with a left hook. Kara-France has Garcia on the retreat with a combination. Kara-France winds up on top following a scramble, but Garcia locks in a triangle from his back. Kara-France stands a tries to slam his way out. Garcia briefly looks to have Kara-France’s arm extended, but the Kiwi escapes and moves to top position in a furious sequence. Kara-France drops some elbows on Garcia near the fence. Kara-France stands to create space and unloads with a series of right hands. Kara-France keeps the assault coming, but Garcia threatens with an armbar, and then a leg lock. That allows Kara-France to land even more ground-and-pound. Garcia’s cousin, Anthony Pettis, is urging his fighter to move from the corner, but Kara-France is in control with a minute to go. Kara-France is upping the intensity of his assault while Garcia clings to a single leg. Kara-France powers his way into mount, and then takes Garcia’s back as the horn sounds. 10-9 Kara-France.

Round 3

Kara-France opens with a left hook that’s partially blocked. Kara-France lands a hard inside leg kick. Garcia whiffs on a punch and then drops low for a single leg. After a scramble, Kara-France wants to stand and referee Greg Kleynjans obliges. A right uppercut-left jab combination lands for Kara-France, and he’s beginning to land strikes in bunches. A pair of straight rights connect for Kara-France, and a third right drops Garcia a few moments later. Garcia hunts for a leg lock when Kara-France presses the action, so the Kiwi fighter backs away. Back in the standup, Kara-France goes back to landing solid straight right hands. A left hook backs up Garcia, who drops low for a single leg. Garcia clings to the leg, and Kara-France makes him pay with punches and hammerfists before taking his back at the 1:20 mark. Kara-France sells out for an armbar, and a scramble ensues. Kara-France stuffs a takedown and punishes his foe with more punches to the side of a head. Garcia again clings to a leg. Kara-France limp-legs away and returns to drop more punches before the horn. 10-8 Kara-France (30-26 Kara-France).

Keita Nakamura vs. Salim Touahri

Round 1

Nakamura is looking to land his straight left through Touahri’s guard, while the Polish fighter attempts to answer with lefts to the body. Touahri looks to find some space with an inside low kick as Nakamura controls the center early. A couple more lefts to the body land for Touahri on the counter. A straight left lands for Nakamura. Touahri blocks a high kick from his opponent. A 2-3 combination just misses for Touahri. A counter left to the body finds a home for Touahri. Nakamura briefly clinches and Touahri shucks his foe off. Touahri lands a knee to the midsection. Touahri connects with a left hook and circles away. 10-9 Touahri.

Round 2

Nakamura comes out aggressively behind a jab and a high kick. The welterweights clinch and Touahri lands a knee to the body on the break. Touahri finds the range on another left hook. A counter right hook form Nakamura clips Touahri and sends the Pole to the floor. He pops right back up, however. Touahri secures a body lock and pushes Nakamura into the fence to clear his head. Nakamura lands a hard short elbow before the fighters break. The Japanese fighter follows his foe and hits an inside low kick. Nakamura is much more aggressive this frame, and he whips a rear kick to the body. A right jab lands for Nakamura. A two-punch combination finds a home for Nakamura, who has really found his rhythm this round. A straight right to the body connects for Touahri, who closes distance and swings power punches at his foe. Nakamura eludes the offerings and continues to stalk. Touahri finally finds a home for his counter left hook. Nakamura lands a left before the horn. 10-9 Nakamura.

Round 3

Nakamura fires of a straight left and then lands a pair of kicks to the body. Nakamura grabs a single leg, but Touahri limp legs free. Nakamura with an inside low kick. Nakamura counters Touahri’s advance with a right hook. Nakamura times a level change and Touahri defends. Still, Nakamura lands a pair of elbows on the break. Nakamura resumes his pursuit and lands an inside low kick on the circling Pole. A straight left lands for Nakamura, who seems to be avoiding Touahri’s counter offerings much better than in the first frame. Touahri lands a knee during a brief tie-up. Another straight left connects for Nakamura, and then Touahri blocks a high kick. Not a lot of volume from either side in this final stanza. Nakamura is content to ride out this methodical approach as time ticks down. A right to the body lands for Touahri in the waning seconds and the combatants trade in close quarters as time expires. 10-9 Nakamura (29-28 Nakamura).

Wilson Reis vs. Ben Nguyen

Round 1

Reis catches a kick about 50 seconds in and pushes Nguyen into the fence. The Brazilian doggedly pursues a takedown and gets it after a little bit of resistance from Nguyen. Nguyen works his way up, but Reis maintains a body lock. The former title challenger lands a few knees while keeping the pressure on. Nguyen gets an underhook, turns his foe around and separates. Reis lands a body kick. Nguyen finds the range on a counter left as the Brazilian advances. Nguyen looks quick on the feet, as he uses good footwork to avoid Reis’ offense. Nguyen kicks the lead leg of his opponent, then lands a one-two. Reis closes the distance and takes Nguyen down right against the fence. Nguyen gives up his back in order to stand. Nguyen stays tight to the fence, so Reis tries for a takedown. He’s denied initially but eventually grabs a single and drags his adversary down. Nguyen stands just as the horn sounds. 10-9 Reis.

Round 2

Reis comes out swinging, but Nguyen is able to avoid the offerings. He isn’t able to stop the Brazilian’s takedown, however, and Reis again is working to take the back. They stand, and Nguyen breaks his foes grip and they separate. Reis with a left to the body as he attempts to close the range. The flyweights tie up following a Nguyen knee attempt, and Reis pushes his man into the fence and changes levels. Nguyen defends well and breaks. At range, Nguyen lands a nice straight left. Reis punches his way back into range and presses Nguyen into the fence. Nguyen gets space with an underhook and they break again. Nguyen catches Reis with a knee, but it’s not completely clean due to the Brazilian’s forward pressure. Reis continues to attack and presses Nguyen into the fence. He connects his hands and takes Nguyen down and elevates his foe’s right leg. Nguyen stands as Reis continues to smother him. Nguyen gets an underhook and reverses the position before breaking free. Reis misses a big right hand and the round ends shortly thereafter. 10-9 Reis.

Round 3

Reis wades forward with punches but it’s Nguyen who connects with a counter right hook. A straight left connects for Nguyen a few moments later. Reis presses forward with combinations, but another short right lands for Nguyen. Another right lands for Nguyen, followed by a knee. Reis finally closes the range and pushes his opponent into the cage. The Brazilian slams Nguyen down. Nguyen, with his lip bleeding, looks frustrated for a moment. He stands, and eventually frees himself from Reis’ grasp. Nguyen angles out and lands a jab. Nguyen sidesteps a Reis shot and lands a short counter. Reis drops low for a double leg and dumps his man down. Nguyen hustles up instantly. Nguyen is landing short shorts as time winds down, but the don’t seem to be affecting the Brazilian veteran. 10-9 Nguyen (29-28 Reis).

Alexey Kunchenko vs. Yushin Okami

Round 1

A slow start sees Kunchenko probing with inside leg kicks. After an outside low kick by the Russian, Okami shoots. Kunchenko defends and lands a series of blows to the ribs before they break. Kunchenko follows an inside low kick with a right over the top. A left hook connects for the former M-1 champ. Kunchenko continues to keep his opponent on the outside, relying on a steady diet of leg kicks. A straight right connects for Okami, who shoots for a takedown and pushes his adversary against the cage. Okami drops low for the takedown again as the action stalls. Referee Neil Swailes orders the welterweights to separate with about 30 seconds left. Kunchenko gets back to work with low kicks and ends a slow-paced round with a body kick. 10-9 Kunchenko.

Round 2

Okami times a level change nicely but drops to a knee and can’t complete the takedown. Kunchenko lands a knee to the body and sprawls on a subsequent takedown attempt. Kunchenko presses the action with a short combination. The Russian moves into range and lands a right over the top. Okami backs up and absorbs a body kick. Kunchenko again defends an Okami takedown. The Japanese fighter shoves Kunchenko into the cage. Kunchenko lands a knee and shoves his foe away. The Russian is gaining confidence as he moves forward with a right. He sprawls on an Okami takedown and lands a knee to the midsection as Okami grinds him into the fence. Kunchenko shoves Okami away and stalks his foe. Okami drops low for a takedown that’s easily defended. Okami tries to invite Kunchenko into guard, but the Russian waits for a standup. Okami lands a knee to the body but is countered for his efforts. Kunchenko sprawls on a takedown and Kunchenko lands some short shots to the body. Kunchenko lands a left and Okami appears to slip and fall just before the end of the period. 10-9 Kunchenko.

Round 3

Kunchenko lands a glancing high kick. A kick to the body finds a home for the Russian, who then wobbles Okami with a right hand. Okami shoots and is stuffed again. He pushes Kunchenko back into the fence and attempts to trip his man down. Kunchenko shows good strength by staying upright. Kunchenko drops some elbows to the side of the head as Okami clings to the takedown, then lands a clean elbow on the break. The Japanese veteran has no course of action in this matchup other than takedowns, which Kunchenko continues to defend with ease. The Russian sprawls on another try, spins to the back and unloads a short volley of punches. The welterweights are standing and Okami pumps his jab. Okami fails on another takedown, and Kunchenko lands a knee to the midsection. Okami is stuffed on a takedown moments later, then invites Kunchenko into guard. The crowd boos and a standup is ordered. In the final minute, it’s Kunchenko turning up the volume, mixing in punches and kicks on a retreating Okami, who ends the round with, of course, one more failed takedown. 10-9 Kunchenko (30-27 Kunchenko).

Jim Crute vs. Paul Craig

Round 1

Craig opens with a spinning high kick, but Crute is able to block it. Craig lands a body kick and moments later puts Crute on his back with a powerful double leg. Crute is active from his back, attempting to sweep, but Craig does a good job maintaining top position. Crute eventually uses a bridge to land on top in half guard. Crute releases and stands, then stumbles forward with a left hook. Craig throws a jumping knee and the light heavyweights end up on the mat. Crute is on top, and he passes to full mount with 2:00 to go. He frames an arm-triangle choke and passes to the side. He squeezes but is probably to close to the cage to finish. Crute abandons the maneuver and goes back to work from half guard. Crute postures up and lands a couple hard right hands before standing. Craig lands a spinning back kick to the midsection before changing levels for a takedown. However, it’s Crute that ends up on top, and he briefly tries to frame a kimura. He gives it up and drops some hammerfists, and Crute will end the round on top. 10-9 Crute.

Round 2

Craig begins with a one-two combination at range. After a landing a jab, Craig secures a takedown and moves Crute to the cage. Craig utilizes heavy top pressure, driving his head into Crute’s chest as the Aussie tries to circle away from the fence. Craig applies shoulder pressure from half guard, but Crute is able to recover his full guard. Crute powers his way back up and then forces Craig to stand with him. Craig drops low immediately, and Crute stuffs the takedown, moving toward his foe’s back and dropping some powerful hammerfists. Craig dives for a leg lock and Crute remains upright briefly before “Bearjew” resets and takes his man down against the cage. Craig is still smothering Crute with a minute to go in the frame. Crute forces a scramble and hops up to his feet, again forcing a referee standup. Craig whiffs on a spinning back kick and follows up with a takedown, but it’s Crute who reverses into top position. He looks for an armbar but Craig defends and moves to top position at the end of the period. 10-9 Craig.

Round 3

A right hand lands for Crute in an initial exchange. Craig attempts a low single leg, but Crute defends and settles in his opponent’s half guard. Crute passes to full mount at the 3:40 mark. The Contender Series alum is looking for the arm-triangle choke again, but he’s right next to the fence. Crute finally passes Craig’s half guard, and the Scot helps his foe by circling his legs away from the fence. Crute continues to squeeze, but Craig is holding on. Crute goes knee on bell, then back into full mount after giving up on the choke. Craig recovers half guard, but Crute is heavy on top. “The Brute” lands some short shots to Craig’s head. Crute switches to elbows, and the intensity of his ground-and-pound picks up, much to the delight of the Adelaide crowd. With about 15 seconds left, Crute transitions to a kimura, elevates his foe and applies some torque to the shoulder. Craig tries in vain to escape but is forced to tap -- even with Crute in half guard -- in a matter of seconds. Seven bouts in and we have our first finish of the evening.

Sodiq Yusuff vs. Suman Mokhtarian

Round 1

Mokhtarian lands a body kick early, then pushes Yusuff against the fence. Yusuff turns his foe around as the clinch war continues. Yusuff is staying busy with knees to the thigh from this position. They separate and Yusuff quickly tees off with a punching combination. Both fighters are trading willingly now, but it’s Yusuff who’s landing more clean shots with authority. A combination rocks Mokhtarian, and he stumbles backward and covers up against the fence. Yusuff continues to unload, tagging his opponent with shots to the body and head. Mokhtarian is covering up well enough, but he isn’t making any attempt to move off the cage. Referee Greg Kleynjans has seen enough at this point, and he steps in to wave off the fight. Mokhtarian protests the stoppage, but Yusuff has a victory in his UFC debut.

Jake Matthews vs. Anthony Rocco Martin

Round 1

Matthews misses on an overhand right, and the crowd is firmly behind its hometown hero. Neither fighter is finding the range in the early going. A glancing right lands for Matthews and he circles away. Martin lands a low kick followed by a straight right. A hard low kick connects for Martin. Matthews digs to the body and follows up with a leg kick of his own. Matthews ducks under a Martin high kick. Matthews with a straight right to the body. Martin goes back to the low calf kick and Matthews counters with an overhand right. Martin nods and moves forward. Matthews is warming up now, winging heavy shots. They trade in the pocket and Matthews drops Martin. The Aussie immediately jumps on a guillotine. Martin attempts to roll out of danger but Matthews hangs on. Eventually Matthews is forced to give up on the squeeze and Martin is on top with less than a minute to go. Matthews reverses with 20 seconds left and fends off an armbar as time expires. 10-9 Matthews.

Round 2

Martin resumes attacking the lead leg of his opponent. It’s a slow beginning to the period, with Matthews circling on the outside and Martin attempting to walk his foe down. An overhand right lands for Matthews, who lands another overhand right and just misses with a follow-up jumping knee. A high kick by Martin is blocked. A one-two from Martin finds a home. Martin sneaks a jab through Matthew’s guard. Martin lands a pair of whipping low calf kicks. Another one-two lands for Martin. Matthews looks to be setting up one-off power shots, but nothing is really landing this round. Martin continues to press the action, landing another low kick. Martin ducks under a massive right hand. Martin absorbs a knee in the clinch and then lands a short right on the break. 10-9 Martin.

Round 3

Martin goes right back to the well with a low kick. Matthews blocks a high kick but comes up short on a follow-up combination. Martin lands a long jab as he continues to pressure. Martin catches Matthews with another leg kick, and the Aussie reaches for an ill-advised takedown. Martin stuffs the takedown attempt and for a moment appears ready to take his opponent’s back. Instead, Martin locks in an anaconda choke. It’s tight, and Matthews goes to sleep in a few seconds.

Mark Hunt vs. Justin Willis

Round 1

Willis throws a body kick and Hunt answers with a hard low kick. Willis lands a low kick to Hunt’s lead leg. Hunt is already bleeding near his shin, but that doesn’t stop him from landing another hard low kick. “The Super Samoan” goes to the body with a kick befor eattacking the legs again. Hunt blasts Willis’ body with his shin once again. Willis is trying to find the range, but he’s missing his punches thus far. Both fighters have adopted a patient approach this stanza. Hunt walks Willis down and lands another body kick. Hunt just misses on a big right and Willis whirls around with a wild spinning back fist. 10-9 Hunt.

Round 2

Willis opens up with an inside low kick. The pace remains methodical, and Willis lands another low kick. Hunt is looking to walk his foe down, and he comes up short on a straight right to the body. Willis lands a couple of quick jabs. Output is lacking here halfway through the frame. Willis continues to flick out his jab periodically. The shots land, but they aren’t especially damaging shots. Hunt, however, isn’t doing much of anything this round. The heavyweights keep circling. Hunt loses his mouthpiece, and time is called so he can put it back in. Willis lands another jab when the action resumes. Willis is doing a good job outpointing Hunt in an otherwise unmemorable round. 10-9 Willis.

Round 3

Hunt wisely goes back to attacking with a kick to the body, and Willis responds with another quick jab. Willis mixes in a glancing high kick with his jabbing attacking, and Hunt looks out of sorts. Willis is outmaneuvering Hunt, picking his spots with his lead hand. Willis is mostly content to jab and circle at this point, because Hunt can’t do anything to stop it. A rear uppercut connects for Willis, who smiles at Hunt as he circles away. Hunt can’t cut the Octagon off, and Willis is having no difficulty sticking and moving. It’s not particularly exciting, but it’s effective. With 30 seconds left, a frustrated Hunt continues to plod forward. Willis jabs some more, while Herb Dean urges the fighters to engage. Boos rain down, and Hunt will likely end his UFC tenure on a down note. 10-9 Willis (29-28 Willis)

Mauricio Rua vs. Tyson Pedro

Round 1

There’s a feeling-out process in the opening minute, as neither fighter has thrown a strike yet. Shortly thereafter, an accidental clash of heads has Rua wobbly and Pedro attempts to capitalize. A momentary brawl ensues. Rua eventually recovers his senses somewhat and shoves Pedro into the fence. They separate and Rua lands a hard right-hand counter. Pedro comes forward and lands a one-two. Rua comes over the top with a right hand. Pedro follows a push kick with a jab. Pedro hurts Rua and he is teeing off now. Pedro makes Rua’s legs buckle with a series of uppercuts near the fence. Pedro goes for a takedown, then relents. The Aussie slips on a head kick and pops back up. They tie up against the fence, and Pedro lands some good knees and uppercuts on the inside. Rua turns his opponent and attempts to land a takedown, but Pedro keeps is balance. Rua ends up in top position following a failed kimura from Pedro, and that’s how a wild round will end. 10-9 Pedro.

Round 2

Rua tags Pedro with an overhand right in an initial exchange. “Shogun” comes forward and secures a body lock. Pedro defends, but Rua finally works his way to a rear body lock. The Brazilian drags his man down to the canvas. Pedro frames a kimura, but the hold slips as he attempts to sweep, so Rua is on top in side control. Rua lands some short shots to the head from top position. Finally, Pedro gets to his feet with a minute to go. Rua remains attached and drags his foe back to the mat, where he lands some hammerfists before forcing the Aussie onto his back. Rua ends the frame on top in the north-south position. 10-8 Rua.

Round 3

Pedro looks unstable on his rear leg as he circles on the outside and he stumbles awkwardly. Moments later, Rua lands a right hand and Pedro is forced to put weight on his back leg and he falls to the canvas. “Shogun” pounces and unloads with a series of punches and hammerfists from above. The apparently injured Pedro cannot defend himself, and referee Steve Perceval steps in to wave off the fight. Rua is back in the win column following a devastating knockout loss against Anthony Smith in July.

Junior dos Santos vs. Tai Tuivasa

Round 1

Tuivasa lunges forward aggressively and stumbles into the cage after missing a combination. Tuivasa is getting a little wild in his pursuit early on, as he falls forward again. Dos Santos circles on the outside, looking to jab the body. Tuivasa ties up his opponent and presses him into the fence. Dos Santos breaks free and comes up short on a spinning back kick. “Cigano” whiffs on a massive overhand. A short right from JDS catches Tuivasa coming in. “Bam Bam” is unfazed and he clinches, landing an elbow on the break. A spinning back kick up high glances past Tuivasa’s head. A right uppercut lands for dos Santos, but Tuivasa remains in pursuit. A low kick by Tuivasa makes JDS stumble. Tuivasa moves into the clinch, and he goes to the body and then lands a big punch upstairs. Tuivasa finds the Brazilian’s chin once more before forcing another clinch. Strong close to the round for Tuivasa. 10-9 Tuivasa.

Round 2

Dos Santos’ mobility already looks hindered at the outset of the period due to the leg kick from the previous round. Tuivasa punches his way into the clinch. then they separate. Tuivasa follows an overhand right back into the clinch once again. Dos Santos checks a leg kick and lands one of his own. Tuivasa lands a right to the body and presses the Brazilian back into the fence. The former heavyweight champ rocks Tuivasa, who shakes it off and waves his foe on. Dos Santos tags an onrushing Tuivasa with a left hook to the chin, then drops him with a short right. JDS follows his foe to the mat and ends up in side control, where he drops short elbows to the head. “Cigano” moves to mount. He postures up and unloads with punches and hammerfists. Herb Dean is taking a close look, and after watching a flurry of unanswered ground-and-pound, he calls off the heavyweight fight.
