Source: Renan Barao Was Offered Time To Make Weight, Declined To Try

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight champion Renan Barao missed weight on Friday for his fight against Andre Ewell tomorrow night, and his opponent’s camp is not surprised.

Barao (34-6, 1 N/C) has become notorious for weight issues throughout his UFC tenure, having withdrawn from UFC 177 days before the fight after slipping in a hotel bathtub while cutting weight, and even trying a stint at featherweight with mixed results. Perhaps in an effort to reclaim bantamweight gold, Barao moved back to 135 pounds to take on Ewell at UFC Fight Night 137 in Sao Paulo on Sept. 22.

Not surprisingly, the former champ missed weight again, but his opponent’s camp believes he never intended on making weight in the first place considering the circumstances of his weight cut.

“Renan weighed in at 141.75 (5.75lbs over the limit),” a source in Ewell’s camp told Sherdog.com on Friday. “The Commission approved him to continue to cut weight (he still had close to 2 hours before scales closed). But Renan himself refused to continue to cut (weight), even (after) being medically cleared. It appears he had no intention of making the bantamweight limit from the start.”

Barao was considered to be one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world during his championship run from 2012 to 2014, but after two knockout losses to T.J. Dillashaw, the man who took his bantamweight title, the Brazilian’s career has taken a downward turn. He has gone 2-4 since losing his belt, and this most recent weight-cutting debacle is consistent with Barao’s well-documented issues making weight over the last few years.

Ewell (13-4) takes on the former champ on the main card of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 137, which will be headlined by Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders in a light heavyweight contest.
