Tyron Woodley Successfully Defends Welterweight Crown to Cap Extraordinary UFC 228 Event

Tyron Woodley has been vocal about the lack of respect he’s been given over the years, even after he became the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight champion.

After Saturday night, “The Chosen One” might have finally silenced his critics. Woodley (19-3-1) took his time in the opening round of the main event of UFC 228, but he never allowed challenger Darren Till to mount any sort of offense. Woodley landed a few strikes in the first and spent most of his time in the clinch. But in the second, he made sure Till never got anything going.

The champ dropped the Englishman with a short right hand to the jaw early on in the second and from there, he utilized a punishing ground-and-pound assault until he finished him. Woodley slammed down dozens of elbows and punches onto Till’s head, opening up multiple cuts along the way.

When Till tried to scramble back to his feet, Woodley locked on a textbook brabo choke and eventually forced the tap. Till (17-1-1) succumbed to the submission at 4:19, allowing Woodley to retain his title.

Andrade Melts Kowalkiewicz with One Punch

Brazil’s Jessica Andrade staked her claim as the leading contender for the UFC strawweight title by vanquishing Karolina Kowalkiewicz in spectacular fashion.

Andrade stormed out of her corner and unloaded a blitzkrieg of punches onto the Pole, staggering Kowalkiewicz repeatedly. Andrade nearly flattened her foe in less than 30 seconds, but Kowalkiewicz displayed immense heart and a will of iron. However, with Kowalkiewicz (13-3) reeling, Andrade unloaded a sinister right hook to the jaw, knocking her flat onto her back, out cold.

The sensational knockout came at 1:58 of the first, allowing Andrade to win her third in a row and improve to 19-6.

Magomedsharipov Continues Ascent

Featherweight contender Zabit Magomedsharipov was sensational yet again as he slowly and systematically broke late-replacement opponent Brandon Davis before submitting him.

The Dagestani native didn’t land too many of his popular wild attacks but he didn’t need to. Once he got Davis (9-4) to the canvas in the second and seized his back, Magomedsharipov (16-1) rolled him into a perfect banana split and forced the tap, ending it via knee bar from back mount, the second such submission of the night.

The end officially came at 3:46 of the second, giving Magomedsharipov his 12th consecutive win.

Rivera Bests Dodson

Bantamweight contender Jimmie Rivera improved to 22-2 by outpointing former world title challenger John Dodson over three rounds.

The fight was largely devoid of action as Dodson backed off completely during rounds two and three, leaving the capacity crowd demanding action through booing and silent apathy. In the end, Rivera won via tallies of 30-27 (twice) and 29-28. “The Magician” fell to 12-10.

Price is Right for Alhassan

Welterweight contender Niko Price played Russian roulette in the opening bout of the pay-per-view telecast as he opted to stand toe-to-toe with Abdul Razak Alhassan and slug with him. Both men landed decent punches early, but the Ghanaian’s crushing punching power eventually came through.

Price (12-2) was wobbled by a right to the ear during an exchange and once Alhassan (10-1) was in range during the flurry, a perfectly-executed left-right-left to the face knocked the Floridian out cold. The sensational highlight-reel knockout happened in just 43 seconds.
