Jon Jones Envisions Taking Both Titles from Daniel Cormier; ‘DC’ Fires Back on Twitter

In his ideal scenario, Jon Jones envisions taking both the light heavyweight and heavyweight belts from Daniel Cormier upon his return to the UFC.

First, Jones would prefer to face Cormier at light heavyweight, where the two have squared off twice before in UFC competition. Jones defeated Cormier via unanimous decision at UFC 182 and again via TKO at UFC 214; the second triumph was overturned to a no contest after the Jackson-Wink product tested positive for the anabolic steroid Turinabol.

"Daniel Cormier is stating that he has better knockout power at heavyweight, [that] he's more dangerous at heavyweight. It's believable but I would have much stronger knockout power at heavyweight as well. I think it would be a nice little twist that the fans would love to see but my vision is fighting him at light heavyweight first,” Jones told Russian outlet RT Sport.

"I think that beating him a third time would really do something to his confidence. In his head, I feel like he thinks he can still beat me, especially because the fight was going fairly well until I knocked him out. I want to crush his confidence.”

Jones was stripped of the light heavyweight belt following his failed drug test, and Cormier was reinstated as 205-pound champion. In July, “DC” became a two-division titlist with a knockout of then heavyweight king Stipe Miocic at UFC 226. Jones believes that a win over Cormier at 205 pounds would set up a showdown for heavyweight gold, and his rival wouldn’t be in the right frame of mind when that fight arrived.

"Leading into our fourth fight, a possible fourth fight for the heavyweight championship of the world, his confidence won't be in the right spot,” Jones said. “It won't, and I think it will help me take that fourth victory over him and that heavyweight championship from him. I think I have his number.”

Of course, a lot would have to happen for this scenario to play out the way Jones has imagined it. The Jackson-Wink MMA product is still awaiting a ruling from USADA on his anti-doping case, and he could face as much as a four-year suspension as a second-time offender. If he is found not to be at fault, the sanction could be reduced – but how much remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Cormier has said that he plans to fight twice before turning 40 in March, and one of those seems likely to be a showdown with Brock Lesnar in early 2019. He has also vowed to defend the light heavyweight crown before the end of 2018, so Jones has a limited amount of time to be cleared if he wants to catch Cormier again.

The American Kickboxing Academy product got wind of Jones’ vision and responded on Twitter, pointing at “Bones” repeated drug test failures, which also include a positive screening for cocaine.

That, in turn, prompted Jones to respond to Cormier:

Whether Cormier and Jones get a chance to square off again before “DC” calls it a career remains to be seen, but there is clearly still plenty of heat between the two fighters.
