Bellator’s 10-Man Welterweight Tourney Begins with Lima vs. Koreshkov 3 on Sept. 29

Bellator announced nine of the 10 welterweights that will comprise its 170-pound tournament on Tuesday after initially revealing the concept last month.

In keeping with Bellator’s traditions of tournaments, the welterweight grand prix will feature current promotional champion Rory MacDonald; former champions Douglas Lima and Andrey Koreshkov; undefeated welterweights Michael Page, Neiman Gracie, Ed Ruth, and Yaroslav Amosov; and former UFC welterweights Lorenz Larkin and Jon Fitch.

The 10th man has yet to be announced. Bellator officials said there will be two preliminary qualifying bouts that will determine the rest of the bracket. Conspicuous by his absence from the field is British knockout artist Paul Daley. According to a report from ESPN.com, contract negotiations between Daley and the promotion are ongoing, and “Semtex” could still join the tournament once an agreement is reached.

A trilogy fight between Lima and Koreshkov will kick off the welterweight tournament at Bellator 205 on Sept 29. The two are currently tied at 1-1, as Koreshkov took a five-round verdict over “The Phenom” at Bellator 140 before Lima avenged that defeat with a third-round knockout at Bellator 164 in 2016.

MacDonald, the reigning welterweight champion, is scheduled to challenge middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi at the Sept. 29 event, but he will enter the tournament regardless of the result in that bout. Bellator 205 will be the first card to be streamed live on the DAZN network, which will cost U.S. MMA fans $9.99 a month.
