Michael McDonald Hopeful He Can Avoid Surgery for Hand Injury Suffered at Bellator 202

Shortly after his resounding knockout victory against Eduardo Dantas at Bellator 202, Michael McDonald was questioning whether he should continue with his mixed martial arts career.

That was because “Mayday” thought he broke his left hand during the bout, and the prospect of a fifth hand surgery was not appealing to the 27-year-old Californian. On Tuesday, however, McDonald offered a more optimistic outlook on his future prospects.

“A bone in my hand near my wrist was shattered into multiple pieces when I was finishing the fight,” McDonald wrote on social media. “Although the break is severe, the pieces of the bone are still 80 [percent] in their original placement. So I don’t need surgery to correct the alignment at this time.

“We are going to let it heal naturally for six weeks and then assess it afterward. The doc says surgery after six weeks pass could be an option, but this will be our ‘step one’ attempt to fix the hand.”

McDonald is 2-0 since joining Bellator after a 6-3 stint with the UFC. His impressive victory over Dantas, a former bantamweight champion, could set him up nicely for a future showdown with current 135-pound Darrion Caldwell when he is able to return to full health.
