Dana White on Mayweather to UFC Rumors: ‘I’m Interested, and He’s Obviously Interested’

It seems that a week can’t go by without some kind of talk regarding Floyd Mayweather’s potential move to the UFC.

Most recently, UFC President Dana White weighed in on the matter during a brief interview with TMZ Sports.

“I’m interested, and obviously he’s interested,” White said. “The last time we were both interested, you saw what happened.”

White, of course, is referencing the Aug. 26 boxing match between Mayweather and Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Mayweather announced his retirement from boxing following a 10th-round technical knockout victory over the UFC lightweight champion. “Money” has since confirmed that he is applying for an MMA license.

Considering that Mayweather and McGregor have continued to trade barbs on social media, it would seem that a rematch between the two rivals – this time in the Octagon – would be the most lucrative option.

“Who knows? But, yeah, possibly Conor,” White said. “I know Conor wants it.”

It isn’t the first time that White has mentioned interest in signing Mayweather. He first broached the subject in December after Mayweather claimed the Las Vegas-based promotion had offered him a multi-fight contract.

"We're talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal," White told ESPN.com. "It's real. He was talking about [boxing] Conor McGregor. Was that real? Have you heard Floyd talk about many things that aren't real? He usually tips his hand when he's in the media, and then that s—t ends up happening.

"We're interested in doing something with Floyd. Everything is a realistic possibility. Mayweather vs. McGregor f---ing happened. Anything is possible.”

Mayweather has stated that he would need approximately six to eight months to train for his MMA debut, and it appears that UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley will assist him in that endeavor. White disputes the notion that Mayweather can learn everything he needs to in that time span.

“Obviously, he’s a very talented guy, but as far as the wrestling, nobody is going to learn to wrestle in six to eight weeks,” White said. “It takes years of wrestling, martial arts, and combat sports training to be a mixed martial artist… years.”

Mayweather is known for his defensive style in the ring, and his longevity in boxing can be attributed in large part to his ability to avoid being hit. If his wrestling isn’t adequate, that won’t matter in an MMA bout.

“He’s a defensive master with his hands,” White said. “When somebody double-legs you and drops you on your head, he doesn’t have the defense for that.”
