Paige VanZant Staying at Flyweight After Witnessing Uriah Hall Weight-Cutting Incident

Rising mixed martial arts fighter Paige VanZant recently moved from strawweight to the flyweight division citing the brutal weight cut as the deciding factor behind her decision.

VanZant (7-4) is currently recovering from a broken arm and recently told the BBC her weight sits around 135 pounds when she’s not competing, so making the strawweight limit of 115 pounds was causing serious issues to her body.

“I was having different issues with myself and my body. I was giving myself an eating disorder to make the weight.” VanZant said.

The introduction of the Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight division meant VanZant didn’t have to push her body to the limits and shed up to 20 pounds in the lead up to a fight just to make weight. In January, she made her debut in the flyweight division against Jessica-Rose Clark. While the night didn’t end well for her after she suffered a broken arm on her way to losing via a unanimous decision, she witnessed an incident that would put her weight cuts into perspective. VanZant explained how she saw UFC middleweight fighter Uriah Hall collapse and have to be rushed to hospital as a result of a severe weight cut, something VanZant knew all too well while trying to compete at a lower weight.

”I was at a fight where a fellow UFC fighter, Uriah Hall, was cutting weight and he pushed himself just to the brink of death. He had kidney failure and started seizing in the hallway right in front of me.

”It’s because of that I’m like ‘I can’t do this anymore.’”
