UFC 224 takes place on May 12 in Rio de Janeiro and will also include a middleweight clash pitting Vitor Belfort against Lyoto Machida. Additionally, 185-pound contenders Ronaldo Souza and Kelvin Gastelum will square off in another featured bout.
Nunes, 29, captured the bantamweight crown with a first-round submission of Miesha Tate at UFC 200. “Lioness” has since defended the belt with a first-round technical knockout of Ronda Rousey at UFC 207 and split verdict over Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 215.
Pennington, also 29, has risen to No. 1 contender on the strength of a four-fight winning streak that includes triumphs over Tate, Bethe Correia and Jessica Andrade. The Colorado native hasn’t competed since outpointing Tate at UFC 205 in November 2016 after suffering a broken leg in a hunting accident.
