UFC 213 Prelims: Alexey Oleynik Squeezes Travis Browne into Submission in Las Vegas

Travis Browne found himself trapped in the squeeze of Alexey Oleynik, and his situation quickly deteriorated from dire to hopeless.

Oleynik submitted the monstrous 6-foot-7 Hawaiian with a second-round rear-naked choke in the featured UFC 213 “Romero vs. Whittaker” prelim on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Browne (18-7-1), who had never before been submitted, conceded defeat 3:44 into Round 2. He has lost four fights in a row.

The two heavyweights traded heavy shots throughout a grueling first round, each man staggering the other. Late in the frame, Oleynik struck for a takedown, advanced to the back and threatened with a rear-naked choke. It was a sign of things to come. Browne scored with a takedown of his own in the second round but squandered his advantage. Oleynik later dragged down “Hapa” from the rear waistlock position, climbed to the back and scissored Browne’s body with his legs before tightening his arms around the neck.

Laprise Liver Shot Buries Camozzi

“The Ultimate Fighter Nations” winner Chad Laprise wiped out onetime Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion with third-round punches in a preliminary welterweight scrap. Camozzi (7-4) bowed out 87 seconds into Round 3, losing for the second time in as many outings.

Laprise (12-2) struck well in combination, cut off the Factory X export’s advances with clean counters and answered a leg kick with a trip takedown late in the first round. However, his output dipped to alarming levels in the middle stanza and allowed Camozzi to gain a foothold in the match. It did not last. Early in the third round, Laprise fired a left hook upstairs and followed with a straight right hand to the liver. Camozzi doubled over in distress and retreated to the fence but found no refuge there. Laprise tore into him with a flurry of knees and punches, burying him at the base of the cage before forcing the stoppage.

A short-notice replacement for the injured Alan Jouban, Laprise has recorded back-to-back victories since his split decision loss to Ross Pearson in March 2016.

Santos Slows Meerschaert Charge

Tata Fight Team rep Thaigo Santos disposed of Gerald Meerschaert with punches in the second round of their undercard pairing at 185 pounds. Meerschaert (26-9) succumbed to blows 2:04 into Round 2, the Roufusport standout’s seven-fight winning streak having run its course.

Santos (15-5) handled some early adversity, including a nasty horizontal gash to the side of his head, and let his fists and feet do the rest. He had Meerschaert in survival mode in the first round and continued his assault in the second. There, Santos countered a takedown attempt with a sprawl and crushing hammerfists, moved to the top ride position and then powered into half guard. Meerschaert offered brief resistance before settling in the fetal position, where he was met with unabated hammerfists until referee Marc Goddard had seen enough.

Muhammad Tops Struggling Mein

Former Titan Fighting Championships titleholder Belal Muhammad overcame a slow start to take a clear-cut unanimous decision from the reeling Jordan Mein in a preliminary welterweight tilt. Muhammad (12-2) swept the scorecards with 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 nods from the judges, as he won for the third time in four appearances.

Mein (29-12) hammered away with leg kicks throughout the first round, only to lose his way in the waning moments. Muhammad employed a clinch-heavy attack over the final two frames, battering the Canadian with knee strikes and elbows, one of which opened a cut above Mein’s left eye. His confidence grew in the latter stages of the fight, as he countered an attempted kimura with a takedown, moved to the back and bottled up Mein with a body triangle.

The 27-year-old Mein has suffered three straight defeats.

Prospect Stamann Subdues Ware

Repeated takedowns, a heavy top game and steady ground-and-pound carried Michigan Top Team prospect Cody Stamann to a unanimous decision over Terrion Ware in a three-round undercard clash at 145 pounds. All three cageside judges scored it for Stamann (14-1): 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

Ware (17-6) controlled many of the standup exchanges -- he scored often with a consistent jab -- but could not stay upright. Stamann executed takedowns in all three rounds and was particularly effective in the third. There, he passed from half guard to side control before achieving full mount and raining punches on Ware. Stamann punctuated a successful UFC debut with another takedown in the closing seconds.

The 27-year-old Stamann has won eight fights in a row.

Unbeaten Giles Mauls Bochnovic

Undefeated Octagon newcomer Trevin Giles kept his perfect professional record intact and did so in overwhelming fashion, as he knocked out James Bochnovic with second-round ground-and-pound in a preliminary light heavyweight encounter. Giles (10-0) drew the curtain 2:54 into Round 2.

Bochnovic (8-2) was overmatched. Giles executed multiple takedowns in the first round and smothered the Ben Rothwell protégé with his top game, battering him with elbows, punches and hammerfists. The middle stanza offered more of the same. Giles sprawled out of a desperate takedown attempt, advanced to the back and flattened out his counterpart. He eventually achieved full mount and separated Bochnovic from his senses with a burst of unanswered punches.

The loss snapped Bochnovic’s eight-fight winning streak.
