Nevada Athletic Commission Approves Aug. 26 for Potential Mayweather-McGregor Bout

The much-hyped boxing superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor now has a potential date and venue.

On Wednesday, the Nevada Athletic Commission approved Mayweather Promotions request to hold a boxing event on Aug. 26 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. While that does not guarantee that Mayweather and McGregor will fight then, it was previously reported that Mayweather Promotions was hoping to secure the date with that very bout in mind.

ESPN.com later reported that Mayweather Promotions planned to retract that request, but NAC executive director Bob Bennett confirmed that the group asked to be placed back on the agenda.

"I got a call [Tuesday] night from Mayweather Promotions that they wanted to be put back on the agenda, so I put them back on the agenda," Bennett told ESPN's Dan Rafael. "They pulled the request but then decided to put it back on."

The approved event will be televised on Showtime, according to the request. Mayweather has fought exclusively at the MGM Grand since taking a split decision victory over Oscar de la Hoya in 2007. If it comes to fruition, the Mayweather-McGregor card is expected to feature only boxing bouts. Last month, UFC President Dana White revealed that McGregor’s portion of the contract had been finalized.

The 40-year-old Mayweather last competed in September 2015, when he took a unanimous decision over Andre Berto to improve his career mark to 49-0. McGregor, meanwhile, last appeared at UFC 205 in November, when he stopped Eddie Alvarez in the second round to claim the promotion’s lightweight strap.
