Dana White Confirms Werdum-Velasquez Rematch for UFC 196 in Las Vegas

The heavyweight title rematch between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez will take place in the United States instead of Brazil.

UFC President Dana White confirmed to UFC Total on Wednesday that Werdum and Velasquez will square off at UFC 196 in Las Vegas on Feb. 6. It was previously rumored that the heavyweight tilt would take place at a pay-per-view event in Curitiba, Brazil.

However, the Las Vegas-based promotion hit an unspecified “stumbling block” in attempting to book the bout in the South American nation and was considering moving it to Las Vegas as recently as last month. Now the booking is official.

Werdum defeated Velasquez via third-round submission at UFC 188 in Mexico City this past June to capture the heavyweight strap. “Vai Cavalo” has won six straight fights in the Octagon. The loss halted a four-bout winning streak for Velasquez, who had alternated triumphs over Antonio Silva and Junior dos Santos.

UFC 196 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. No other bouts have been announced for the organization’s traditional Super Bowl weekend card.
