Hector Lombard Suspended, Fined by Nevada Commission for Failed UFC 182 Drug Test

UFC welterweight Hector Lombard was issued a one-year suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) on Monday due to his failed post-fight drug test from UFC 182.

Lombard’s suspension was handed down during Monday’s NAC hearing. The 37-year-old Cuban native was placed on temporary suspension in February after it was revealed that Lombard tested positive for the anabolic steroid desoxymethyltestosterone (DMT) following a unanimous decision victory over Josh Burkman.

In addition to his year-long suspension -- which will end on Jan. 3, 2016, provided Lombard passes an additional drug test -- Lombard was ordered to pay a fine equaling the entire amount of his $53,000 win bonus plus 33 percent of his “show” purse, for a total of approximately $70,000. Lombard’s win over Burkman was overturned to a “no-contest.”

Addressing the commission, Lombard denied knowingly taking a prohibited substance, blaming the positive test on the antibiotic azithromycin, or Z-pak, which he took after weighing in on Jan. 2.

Lombard appeared to be on his way to UFC welterweight title contention after running his winning streak to three with wins over Burkman, Jake Shields and Nate Marquardt. The former Olympic judoka and Bellator middleweight champion has lost only twice in his last 31 fights, dropping split decisions to Yushin Okami and Tim Boetsch inside the Octagon.
