Cain Velasquez-‘Cigano’ Rubber Match Targeted for UFC 166 Headliner in Houston

The UFC’s October return to Houston will likely be headlined by a third meeting between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.

UFC President Dana White released the planned booking during a UFC 161 media scrum on Thursday. The event is expected to serve as UFC 166, though an exact date and venue have not yet been announced.

Dos Santos handed Velasquez the lone loss of his professional career in 2011, wresting the heavyweight title from around the Californian’s waist in just 64 seconds at UFC on Fox 1. Velasquez regained his strap just over one year later, however, beating the Brazilian from pillar to post in a dominant 25-minute display this past December.

Following that triumph, Velasquez successfully defended his title against another massive Brazilian in Antonio Silva, stopping “Bigfoot” in just 81 seconds in their rematch last month at UFC 160. The American Kickboxing Academy standout owns a 10-1 UFC record and has finished 10 of his 12 career victims by form of knockout.

Like Velasquez, dos Santos also returned to the Octagon at UFC 160, stopping the durable Mark Hunt with a third-round spinning hook kick in the evening’s co-main event. Known for his power punching and boxing skills, “Cigano” has finished 75 percent of his conquered foes by way of knockout and has been stopped just once in 18 professional appearances.
