With ‘Minotoro’ Nogueira Injured, Gustafsson Draws Thiago Silva for UFC on Fuel 2 Headliner

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has suffered a knee injury in training and will be unable to compete in the UFC on Fuel TV 2 main event against Alexander Gustafsson. In the Brazilian’s place steps countryman Thiago Silva, who now meets the Swedish prospect in the April 14 headliner.

UFC officials announced the news Tuesday afternoon. UFC on Fuel TV 2 marks the promotion’s first trip to Sweden and airs live on Fuel TV. Taking place at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, the event also features a co-headlining middleweight attraction pitting Brian Stann against Alessio Sakara.

Silva was originally scheduled to square off with Igor Pokrajac at UFC on Fuel TV 3 in May, but that pairing has now apparently been scrapped. Known for his punching power and aggression in the cage, Silva has not competed since battering Brandon Vera in January 2011. However, following his unanimous decision victory over “The Truth” last year, Silva’s drug screen was flagged and the fighter later admitted to using a urine adulterant to conceal the use of a banned substance. Silva was fined and suspended for one year, and the result of the bout was changed to a no-contest.

Just 25 years old, Gustafsson has posted a 5-1 record since joining the UFC in 2009. The Swede debuted with a first-round knockout of Jared Hamman but stumbled in his sophomore effort against Phil Davis. Since his submission defeat to “Mr. Wonderful” in 2010, the light heavyweight has rattled off four consecutive wins, besting Cyrille Diabate, James Te Huna, Matt Hamill and, most recently, Vladimir Matyushenko this past December at UFC 141.
